Supernatural Lets Katie Cassidy Go

Sexy Supernatural thief Bela (Lauren Cohan) has already been sent to hell — unlike Dean, she won’t be released — and now the show’s creator Eric Kripke tells TV Guide it’s bye bye to sexy demon Ruby (Katie Cassidy) as well.

“She’s great, but this was unfortunately a financial decision — purely budgetary, because creatively she was terrific," Kripke said. "I have nothing but great affection for Katie, and she was great for the show. It was a very difficult business decision about the realities we are in." Though the budget’s the same as last year, the show films in Canada and is suffering from a lousy exchange rate.

There will be female characters, Kripke promises. But expect more of the love ‘em, leave ‘em or kill ‘em variety. “We have a plan that’s as exciting as any we’ve ever had of how to thread new characters in some unexpected ways,” he said, adding that the season opener will have a couple of “bombshells that will set the show off in a new direction.” Just don’t mess too much with those Winchester boys! — Ileane Rudolph

Katie Cassidy Out of 'Supernatural' Season 4

Rubela haters, your wishes have been granted. In the penultimate episode of Supernatural's third season, Bela (Lauren Cohan) was dragged off to Hell after revealing that she had sold her soul to evil demon leader Lilith. It was a brutal, shocking exit for a character that most fans weren't particularly fond of. Now, in a recent interview with TV Guide series creator Eric Kripke has revealed that viewers have also seen the last of Ruby (Katie Cassidy). While Kripke admitted that getting rid of Bela was a creative decision, it appears that Ruby's unceremonious exit is due to financial reasons.

Kripke commented to TV Guide about Cassidy's exit, saying, "She's great, but this was unfortunately a financial decision — purely budgetary, because creatively she was terrific. I have nothing but great affection for Katie, and she was great for the show. It was a very difficult business decision about the realities we are in." As I wrote in an article last week, Supernatural has always had trouble bringing female characters into the crazy world the Winchesters inhabit. Kripke promises that there will still be females in the series, but they'll likely be minor love interests, damsels in distress, or evil demons that need slaying. While mentioning that the fourth season premiere will contain some bombshells that will "set the show off in a new direction," Kripke added that he has some ideas on how to integrate new characters in unexpected ways. Many fans, including myself, speculated that Ruby would play a big role in helping Dean (Jensen Ackles) escape from Hell. Her fate was left up in the air after her violent run-in with Lilith in the season finale, but this news pretty much confirms that Ruby is dead and gone. The character seemed to have a lot of interesting dimensions left to explore, and it's a shame the Supernatural writers will have to abandon their plans for her. Even a demon as powerful as Ruby can't defeat the evil foe known as budgetary restrictions.

Creator of Supernatural signs new deal which may bring paranormal prequel

THE CREATOR and executive producer of cult series Supernatural has entered a two-year deal with Warner Bros TV that could see a spooky spin-off to the hit programme.

Showbiz magazine Variety said Eric Kripke had signed the exclusive deal and would continue to produce and run the show, which enters its fourth season this autumn and follows the adventures of demon-hunting brothers Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles). Kripke also will start to develop other projects. There's no details yet about whether one of the new titles might be a Supernatural spinoff, but Kripke previously said that he is interested in doing a prequel to Supernatural that takes place in the Old West and centres on the show's mythology. Kripke spoke recently to TV Guide with some spoiler information about what's coming up in the next season. The site also reports that Jensen Ackles is on the nominations ballot for the 2008 Emmy Awards in the category of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Dramatic Series.

Ackles, 30, is currently in Pittsburgh filming horror flick My Bloody Valentine: 3D, in which he plays Tom Warden, a mentally unstable young man who returns to his home town ten years after a series of 22 brutal murders were committed and finds himself the lead suspect. The movie comes out on January 23, 2009. Jared Padalecki, 25, spoke to Splatter Films about the next Supernatural series.

When I become heavily invested in a television show, I rarely seek out the opinions of other fans online. If I'm truly enjoying a series I'd rather not hop on message boards and read the rants of other people. Despite my best efforts, sometimes I can't avoid it when a story line or character causes a giant tidal wave of Internet fan backlash. Some changes to a show are so controversial that it's impossible to drown out the cries of angry viewers.

One show that's had its fair share of heavily debated changes over the years is Supernatural. Fans are deeply passionate about the series, and often opposed to any plot twist that takes time away from the brotherly bond between the Winchesters. However, there's one thing in the world of Supernatural that creates more fan outrage than any plot twist ever could: the addition of potential love interests.

The Winchesters have run into their fair share of sexy ladies during the show's first few seasons, but there are three characters in particular that have caused massive fan backlash: Jo, Ruby and Bela. While each of these women had the potential to become a love interest for one of the brothers, the writers decided to listen to the angry fans and avoid controversy. Was this ultimately the best thing for the show, or did the writers deny us interesting story lines just to quell the outrage?

Jared's Underwear Dilemma

As a result his first stop when he arrived in Sydney was to pick up some new underpants, but for a guy who spends most of his time battling the paranormal on the Network Ten hit show Supernatural as Sam Winchester, buying grundies proved quite a challenge.

"I had to go buy clean underwear with the crazy Australian sizes that I didn't understand," he told AAP in Sydney. "Sixteen? 18? I have no idea what size I am - we do small, medium and large. "They're far too small - they're like a thong. It's embarrassing."

But the hoards of teenage girls who queued up to see Padalecki at the Supanova Pop Culture Expo in Sydney didn't mind. Hundreds of fans of the show waited in line for hours to see Padalecki and grab an autograph or a photo.

Padalecki, who made a name for himself playing teen heartthrob Dean on the hit show the Gilmore Girls, says meeting his fans is one of the biggest perks of the job."It's exciting to do stuff like this - people are coming to see you and take pictures, and give you compliments and take photos with you and want your autograph - you definitely feel cool after doing it," Padalecki joked. "We put in so many hours on this show that it's nice to meet people face-to-face as opposed to seeing ratings - a meaningless number on an internet site somewhere." Padalecki filmed Disney movie A Ring of Endless Light in Australia in 2002 and then a remake of House of Wax with Paris Hilton in 2005.

He is one of many stars who have turned up in Sydney to greet fans at the Supanova Expo, including Jewel Staite from Firefly and Stargate: Atlantis, Kandyse McClure from Battlestar Galactica, and the stars of Gladiators and Heroes. The Expo, which runs all weekend at Sydney Olympic Park, celebrates all things imaginary from Star Wars to Superman, Halo to Harry Potter and Transformers to Tomb Raider.

Celebrity romances fall apart every single day, but it's still easy to become invested in certain couples and root for them to buck the trend. One relationship that seemed destined for longevity was the coupling of Supernatural star Jared Padalecki and actress Sandra McCoy. The two met on the set of the horror film Cry Wolf back in 2005, and in April of this year announced that they were engaged to be married. However, the lifetime of happiness wasn't meant to be. At a Supernatural convention in Dallas over the weekend, Padalecki announced that the relationship is over. Though no reason was given for the split, both actors have said that it was a completely amicable decision.

In a message to Sandra-McCoy.com, the actress made the following statement: "It is true. Jared and I are no longer engaged. I did not want this information to have to come from me, but I felt it was necessary to confirm it in order to protect Jared from being asked questions about it this weekend in Dallas. Contrary to what you may have heard/read, our split was not caused by any foul play on either of our parts, we simply decided that it was not the right time for us. We still love each other very much, but we want different things in life, and it's a simple as that. Please know that it is extremely difficult for me to write this, and I can only imagine how hard it would be for Jared to have to talk about it in front of hundreds of fans. So I am answering the questions now with the hope that no one will make Jared have to speak about it publicly. Your support past, present, and future is very much appreciated."

Though the actors confirmed that the split was a mutual decision, rumors immediately began swirling around the Internet claiming that Padalecki had taken up with his Friday the 13th co-star, Danielle Panabaker. However, McCoy made it clear that this isn't true. It's certainly odd for a couple that became engaged just two months ago to suddenly break up, but we may never know the real reason behind the split. Unless additional information leaks to the press, we'll just have to believe that both actors felt they were incompatible with one another.

Aside from starring together in Cry Wolf, McCoy also appeared with Padalecki in the Supernatural episode "Bedtime Stories," playing the Crossroads Demon. That episode ended with Sam shooting the demon in the head, which may be a fitting metaphor for a relationship that was so suddenly snuffed out.
